How are you holding up? We are on the downward slope to Friday and what will hopefully be a sunny weekend. (Here's hoping).
So, I have gathered quite a few lovely followers over the last few months (Hi everyone!) and I would like to call on you all for a little bit of help. It's bloggers privilege after all.
I'll get straight to it..I love books, I love buying books, I love owning books, for many years I enjoyed studying books, and for many years after that I enjoyed being surrounded by books as part of my job in a library. Mostly, I love lining books up on shelves and admiring the spines standing side by side, it's very pleasing.
The problem is, I am a fussy reader and I struggle to find books that I enjoy. I need a book to grab me and keep me wanting to come back and I very rarely find a book like this. That's where you come in. You seem like a well read bunch, the literary sort that enjoy the pleasure of reading anything from Adele Parks to Jane Austen. I admire that.
So perhaps you can help a blogger out? Do you have a gem of a book that you have been holding onto that you want the world to know about? Share it with me, I'd love to hear about it.
Most of my favourite books are written in the first person perspective with female protagonists. I especially love books in diary or letter format, I enjoy a good love story but I am not normally one for 'Chick Lit' I'm afraid. I enjoy sad stories, darker stories, they don't need to be light and fluffy. I appreciate good writing. I find bad writing very jarring and I will give up on a book very quickly if the writing annoys me (It's the curse of studying creative writing..you learn about the worst literary faux pas and then you can't unlearn them). Perhaps a better way to explain my tastes is to say that my most loved (non classic) books are 'One Day', 'The Lovely Bones', 'The death and life of Charlie St Cloud' and 'Dash and Lily's book of dares'. These books have kept me reading until the very last word and then left me wanting to read them again and again or write something equally amazing. So do with that information what you will.
And with that, the challenge is set readers, can you find me something to read? I will consider anything, the field is wide open...apart from the 'Fifty shades' trilogy, please don't tell me to read that!

Oh Lexie I love books too, so much so I have to hide them from hubby because I buy way too many! I'm reading Jenny colgan at the moment, I've never read her before, it's called welcome to Rosie Hopkins Sweetshop of dreams. It is a bit chick lit I suppose but I'm really enjoying it. My other fave authors include Rosamunde Pilcher, Kate Morton is fab! And Phillipa Gregory is good for historical stuff I find. Hope that helps a little? :)

Hi Lexie, I too love books and work in a library! My all time favourite book is The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. This year I have loved Dark Matter by Michelle Paver and The Snow Child by Ivey. I have a list on my side bar of the books I've read this year if you are interested. I do rather like a dark tale or creepy books so some of them may interest you. I'd love to know what you read and what you think of them. I use Amazon a lot for recommendations but I'm always up for trying something new! Have a great day. Suzanne

Well I don't suppose I will be much help to you on this one as I am a chic lit fan. I have read One day and Lovely Bones though and enjoyed both of those. Have you read Sister by Rosamund Lupton - I loved that book and it sounds right up your street, I also really enjoyed the Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger (I think that's how you spell it)
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on piles of books though, i have too many the downside is I don;t have a pretty shelf to disply them on, mine is hidden away at the top of my wardrobe :( One day soon though hopefully I will be introduced to my pretty shelf :)

I'm not opposed to chick lit..I think I'm just fussy when it comes to the stories. I'll have a look at Sister :)...I would love to read the Time Travellers wife but I've seen the film and I find it hard to read books once I've seen the film..I always think it's best to do it the other way around.

The book I always go back to is the amazing, although morbid, 'We need to talk about Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. I'm afraid the film is good but just doesn't compare to the book, which I get more out of every time I read. It is one of the most challenging, thought-provoking books I have ever read.
ReplyDeleteMy other stand-out books of just about all-time have to be:
'Never Let Me Go' by Kazuo Ishiguro, which is sad and beautiful.
'The Importance of Being Earnest'. Oscar Wilde is so witty it very nearly hurts (everyone's loving Dorian Grey right now but I am, and will always be, a die-hard Earnest fan).
'Persepolis' (not sure if graphic novels are your bag but this is a good one)
'The Red Tent' by Anita Diamant is an Old Testament story told from a female perspective, which is a genuinely touching love story without being overly saccharine.
You can't beat a good Austen novel, either :)

What a varied selection. I started reading 'never let me go' but again, I had already seen the film and I just couldn't get into the book. Shame really.

I love books too, very important part of life. It's tricky recommending to someone else, these are a few years old now so you may have read them, but how about Vinegar Hill by Manette Ansay or The Secret Lives of Bees by Sue Kidd. x

I'm such a lover of books that I'm having to hunt for more shelves, I can hardly bear to part with any so more storage it must be! :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are several reads that have really captured my imagination so far this year:
The Night Circus (gripping, truly gripping with dark elements, love story, a thread of magic too)
The Language of Flowers (could not have been more interested in the female protagonist! Fascinating!)
Diving Belles (collection of shoot stories rooted in Cornish folklore by a first-time author)
Many more besides but I would be here all day! Are you on Goodreads? Have had some fantastic recommendations through there and it is a brilliant way to keep a virtual bookshelf too!

DeleteThanks for the suggestions. I started reading 'The Night Circus' but I couldn't get into it :(..I have seen 'the language of flowers' and I think I'll give it a go.
I've been wondering about Goodreads..I will wonder on over and see what it's all about!
